ABAC Introduce ‘Approved Energy Expert’ Accreditation

Leading compressed air solutions manufacturer ABAC, who manufacture and distribute the ALUP range of industrial air compressors and equipment, have introduced a new accreditation scheme for their authorised distributor network. Under the scheme, official accreditation of ALUP Approved Energy Expertwill be awarded to specially trained and equipped professionals who have demonstrated exceptional expertise in designing, installing and maintaining energy efficient compressed air systems. New technology courses and performance monitoring are part of the ongoing programme, ensuring that the latest techniques and equipment are available to customers as soon as they become available.

The scheme recognises the fact that operating the most energy efficient compressed air systems can make a real difference to industrial efficiency and profitability. The new ‘Approved Energy Expert’ status will be awarded to ALUP distributors who have undergone the extensive training programme and demonstrated very high levels of professional expertise. This also means that their detailed technical knowledge, training programmes and support facilities have met agreed ABAC standards, ensuring that customers get only the best professional advice, design and installation services available.

ABAC ‘Approved Energy Experts’ will be equipped with the latest monitoring and analysis equipment, allowing them to accurately audit any system and to then provide a comprehensive report, demonstrating potential energy savings accurately and reliably. They will also be qualified in areas such as heat recovery, control devices, air treatment and disposal, and new generation network systems.

Pressure drop wastes energy and money. To overcome pressure drop and maintain system pressure, your compressor must draw additional electric power. Every 2 psi of pressure adds 1% to the cost of electric power supplied to the compressor.

Calculating Costs



This graph provides a method for determining the cost of the total pressure drop in your entire system – from the compressor to the point of use . Locate your Electric Utility Rate on the horizontal axis; read upward to intersect the line that corresponds to your compressor horsepower; read left to the vertical axis to determine the cost of each psi drop in pressure for a compressor operating three shifts at 8760 hours per year. Multiply the annual cost per psi ($/psi) by the total pressure loss.

If your compressor operates less than 24 hours a day, multiply the cost determined from the graph by actual hours of operation per year dived by 8760. Example: pressure loss during single shift operation at five days a week or 2080 hours per year would cost 2080 divided by 8720 or about 24% of the cost determined from the graph. This is the ongoing annual cost necessary merely to compensate for pressure loss in your system.

EXAMPLE: Pressure at air compressor (100 hp) is 120 psig, pressure at point of use is 100 psig = 20 psi drop. If operation is 24/7, kWh is 8 cents your pressure drop cost is $10,000 per year. (8 x 500 x 20). Single shift operation = $2,400 per year.

ABAC ‘Alup Energy Box’ offers high efficiency energy recovery solution for compressed air systems

Leading compressed air specialist ABAC have developed a new system which can be used to recover the waste heat generated by compressed air systems. Called Alup Energy Box, it converts the heat generated by most air compressors into hot water up to 70ÂșC for industrial processes, as well as domestic applications such as hot water for washrooms, replacing the energy normally used to fuel boilers or heaters.

Energy Box provides a convenient, easy to install packaged system that can be fitted to any make of oil injected rotary screw compressor up to 90 kW. The system, which recovers energy from the oil circuit on the compressor via a heat exchanger, can be installed quickly and at a lower cost compared to previously available systems. This allows a return on investment (ROI) to be achieved very quickly, and provides a unique opportunity to recover normally wasted energy from air compressors, regardless of age or make.

The amount of energy it is possible to recover using Energy Box can be significant in reducing energy bills and improving efficiency. For instance, with a relatively small 37 kW compressor, the energy available for recovery can be up to 29.9 kW. which may equate to annual heating costs of over £6000 (based on 4000 operating hours if conventional heaters or boilers are used to provide this energy). Energy Box is available in several sizes to suit any make of oil injected screw compressor from 11 to 90 kW, and operating with larger compressors or for longer periods can result in greater energy savings.

Nick Poole, ABAC UK’s Director, believes that Energy Box will be able to make a significant difference to the running costs of a typical industrial environment. He says:
“The energy used in the generation of compressed air represents a significant proportion of the total energy used by most of modern industry. As a result we have recently seen a major focus on saving energy by the adoption of new technology, not only in air compressors but also in control systems and more efficient air treatment.”

“However, an area that is often overlooked is the adoption of heat recovery systems that allow us to “claw back” otherwise wasted energy. Energy Box’s appeal is that once installed the recovered energy is obtained completely free, as a by-product of routine air compressor operation. And of course it allows us to both reduce carbon emissions and lower operational costs at the same time.”
